So what are barre chords?
A barre chord is a chord where i of our fingers is pressing downwardly more than one string.
If you've never played barre chords before, and then that probably sounds quite difficult, and it is at outset. But, like a lot of things, with practice and patience you'll get the hang of it.
Barre chords in many ways mark our transition from beginner guitarists to intermediate guitarists, so please don't exist put off if y'all struggle with them at first.
Barre chords aren't easy.
Why are barre chords important?
You might be asking yourself, "If barre chords are so difficult, why not just stick with ordinary open chords?"
In that location are some chords that quite simply can't exist played in the open position. Sooner or later, you lot are going to come across a song that unavoidably has a barre chord in information technology.
Barre chords also allow us more options for chords nosotros already know. If we simply know one style of playing a chord it tin can limit our playing considerably.
Our kickoff barre chords
Because barre chords can be catchy, nosotros're going to offset off with the absolute basics of disallowment before we do anything else.
You know your normal A chord?
(If you lot don't understand the to a higher place epitome please read our article "How To Read Guitar Chordboxes In 60 Seconds". It will make everything clear!)
Normally you lot'd play that with three fingers… just we're going to try playing it with but ONE finger.
All we need to do is lie our index finger across all 3 of the strings and press downwards.
Like this:
NB: Y'all'll probably observe unavoidably that y'all end up pressing the loftier E string downwards also. That's fine. We simply don't strum that string when we're disallowment the A. If you can't help merely strum it, that'due south not a trouble. Information technology just means you've got yourself an A6 chord instead of just an A chord. Jazzy!
Give information technology a endeavour.
How does information technology experience? A bit uncomfortable peradventure? Do you find you're having to printing quite hard?
That's quite normal. Don't worry. It takes fourth dimension for our fingers to go used to disallowment.
How does it sound? Are some of the notes non quite sounding? Are you getting a lot of dead string racket instead of nice articulate notes?
Again, perfectly normal.
We have to be patient and allow our fingers time to get used to barring.
Try strumming the chord and arpeggiating it (ie. playing ane notation at a time).
You'll probably find the strum is a flake more forgiving than the arpeggio, but the arpeggio will show us exactly which strings aren't quite being pressed down enough.
Information technology'due south important that you lot don't hurt yourself when playing barre chords. Permit your finger plenty of rest in between attempts at the chord.

The D Major 7 Chord
Dmaj7 is basically the same shape as the A, except nosotros've moved everything over by ane string, so we're barring the 1st, 2nd and tertiary strings of the guitar.
Give it a try. Try strumming information technology and arpeggiating it.
You'll probably detect a lot of similarities with playing this chord and the previous chord.
A good do tin can be to exercise switching between these two chords.
Try them in a sequence:
| A | Dmaj7 | A | Dmaj7 |
Before you go any further with barre chords, it's vital to have these two down.
Have your time and don't try to run before you can walk.
Spend as much time as you need practicing these until you're happy with them.

More Barre Chords…
Once you have the A and the Dmaj7 down, a good barre chord to effort side by side is F#m.
F#m looks like this:
The best style to approach the F#m is to first play the Dmaj7 so reach over with either the third or quaternary finger and press downward the D cord (the 4th string) at the 4th fret.
Give it a try. How does it compare to playing the other chords? Do you observe that when yous stretch over for that extra note that your offset finger tries to follow it? When yous try and place your first finger dorsum down does it pull your other finger with it?
This is quite a common trouble.
Our fingers instinctively try to bunch together. Information technology takes practice to persuade them to work separately from i some other.
Ane matter you can practise to assistance is to re-think the positioning of your thumb circular the back of the neck.
Accept a wait at how your thumb is positioned when you play a chord.
Does it wait like this?
Wrapped right effectually the back of the cervix with the tip of the thumb peaking out over the meridian?
The problem with this sort of grip is, while information technology feels stronger in terms of pressing strings downwardly, it does mean we lose a lot of our reach.
To become some of that accomplish back we want to move our thumb down a bit, closer to the middle of the back of the cervix (the 'spine' if you will).
We also desire to stand our thumb up a bit more and then it's just the print or the tip of the thumb touching the neck. Ideally we don't desire the palm or the heel of the hand touching the cervix at all.
Your manus should now look a scrap like this:
Equally you've moved your pollex to this position yous tin probably feel your fingers span out a lot more than, allowing us more accomplish.
The downside is, yous might feel you no longer accept equally much gripping power to press those strings down.
Eventually, you desire to get to a stage where you can apply enough pressure to the strings without needing a death grip on the neck.
The reality is you may have to compromise a bit between grip and reach. Try adjusting the positioning of your thumb until you feel yous have a good residue between the 2.
This is where we have to again stress the importance of patience.
Barre chords aren't like shooting fish in a barrel.
They take time, so y'all must take your fourth dimension. Don't hurt your fingers by asking too much of them too before long.
Once you're reasonably happy with your F#one thousand chord then try it in a sequence with the A and the Dmaj7.
| A | Dmaj7 | F#m |F#g |
Now let's look at a major barre chord.
You're probably used to doing your F chord like this:
What we're going to try and exercise is bring that high Due east string into the chord every bit well.
The fashion to do this is to flatten that first finger down and so it covers both the B string and the high E cord.
Give it a try. How does it experience? How does it audio?
Again, you may exist having a lot of the issues we encountered with the earlier chords.
Call back, these issues are perfectly normal and they do accept time to resolve, and so exist patient.
Make sure that you:
- Strum the chord.
- Arpeggiate the chord.
- Check the positioning of your thumb.
One time you're reasonably happy with the F chord, there's a nice easy change nosotros can exercise to practice it.
If you lot simply lift off the 3rd and fourth fingers, but go along the first and second fingers on, that gives you a Dm7 chord.
You might notice this chord a bit easier than the F as information technology's nada like as much of a stretch.
Try changing between the two chords in a sequence, like this:
| Dm7 | F | Dm7 | F |
Moving barre chord shapes effectually the neck.
So, we now know a major and a small barre chord shape.
The great thing about these barre chords is, we tin can move them all over the neck, allowing us to play all the major and small-scale chords.
All we need is a basic grasp of the musical alphabet.
Not familar with the musical alphabet? No problem. Cheque out this commodity: Guitar Notes Explained: A Guide For Beginners
Both our major and small barre chords take root notes on the D string, so information technology's the notes on the D cord we need to business organization ourselves with. Here's a diagram of the notes on the D string. (4th string.)
Here's a chord sequence to practice:
| F | Gm |Am | Bb |
Let's try and play it using our 2 barre chord shapes.
We already know our F, but what about that Gm?
Well, we know our F#thousand.
What'southward the side by side annotation on the D string in the diagram later F#?
That'southward correct. It's G. To turn our F#1000 into a Gm, all we need to do is slide information technology along by one fret to the third fret.
Try changing from the F to the Gm a few times. Now, what near that Am? Once more, permit's use the diagram.
We're on Gm. How far do nosotros have to count upwards to get to Am?
That'south right. The musical alphabet goes: G G# A.So nosotros need to motility the small-scale barre chord shape upwards another two frets to the fifth fret.
And so far and so skillful!
Try practicing F to Gm to Am a few times before we wait at the last chord.
Our last chord is Bb.
Information technology's important not to exist put off past chords that have unusual names. Information technology doesn't necessarily mean they're difficult to play.
We're currently on Am. How far practice we demand to move upwards the musical alphabet to get to Bb?
That'south right. Just the 1 fret.
So we're moving from the fifth fret to the sixth fret. BUT, remember, information technology's a major chord we want, not a small, so we need to switch dorsum to our major shape.
This is important to call up as the difference in audio betwixt a major and a minor chord is desperate.
At present let's try the whole sequence:
| F | Gm | Am | Bb |
Become equally slowly as you need to. Make sure yous get the barre chords right to a higher place all else.
Brand sure you take the right fret and the right shape.
